Expressive Approach

The Definition

Expressive Approach: this approach treats the literary work primarily in relation to the author, the expression of the author’s feeling and emotion, or as the product of author’s imagination operating of his or her perceptions.

The Elements

The author’s intention: his/her ideas, meaning, what (s)he is setting out to say, the point (s)he is trying to make, in short, the ‘content’ of the work.

The author’s emotions: the feelings, passions, etc. which imbue the work and express its ‘tone’.

i.e. The author’s attitude to his subject matter.

The author’s identity: what evidence may be found in the work of him/herself, psychology, personality, character, the facts of his/her life, biography, etc.

The author’s originality: what is unique, special, peculiar about his/her ‘style’, what exactly differentiates the ‘form’ of his/her work from that of his/her predecessors.

Berdiri aku disenja senyap

Camar melayang menepis buih

Melayah bakau mengurai puncak

Berjulang datang ubur terkembang.

Angin pulang menyejuk bumi

Menepuk teluk mengempas emas

Lari ke gunung memuncak sunyi

Berayun alun di atas alas.

Benag raja mencelup ujung

Naik marak menyerak corak

Elang leka sayap tergulung

Dimabuk warna berarak-arak.

Dalam rupa maha sempurna

Rindu sendu mengharu kalbu

Ingin datang merasa sentosa

Menyecap hidup bertentu tuju.

Amir Hamzah lahir di Tanjung Pura pada tanggal 28 Februari 1911, dan wafat pada tahun 1946. Beliau belajar di H.I.S, A.M.S dan belajar di Sekolah Hukum Tinggi. Ia dibesarkan dalam lingkungan yang taat beragama Islam, dan banyak mempelajari kesusastraan Melayu Lama, sehingga dalam karyanya banyak menggunakan bahasa Melayu Lama dan bahasa daerahnya, contohnya pada puisi “Berdiri Aku”. Amir Hamzah termasuk salah seorang pendiri dan pemimpin Pujangga Baru.
